Discover Nature Award

Overview

Borders Forest Trust runs the Discover Nature Award to help young adults build a deeper connection with nature, not through simple access, but through immersive experience. The brief was to create an identity that could carry that mission with warmth and credibility.

The starting point was personal. Inspired by pockets full of pine cones, sticks, and stones - the innocent joy of my four-year-old collecting treasures from the forest, the identity embraces a childlike perspective. Nature not just as a destination, but as an experience filled with wonder and awe. That philosophy shaped everything.

At the heart of the identity is a stylised Scots pine cone. A symbol of growth, resilience, and new beginnings; versatile enough to work across print, signage, and digital without losing its warmth.

Bold, wayfinding-inspired typography anchors the visual system. A guiding beacon rather than a decorative element; like a trail marker, it exists to orient rather than impress.

Certificates get filed away. I suggested a reward system inspired by organisations like the Scouts: embroidered patches awarded at each milestone, representing specific accomplishments within the programme. Something participants could attach to a jacket or a bag, a visible, tangible mark of where they’d been and what they’d done.

Recognition becomes something carried rather than stored. That shift changes how the programme feels from the inside.

The award is aimed at 18 to 28-year-olds navigating significant life changes. Free outdoor events, tree-planting days, and chances for meaningful connection with nature, at a moment when it’s most needed. The identity needed to feel open and welcoming without being soft. Curious and active, not passive.

The work started with a pocketful of forest treasures and ended with a system capable of carrying a national environmental programme. That’s the range the brief required, and the range the identity delivers.
